What Is Mushroom Brown?
Whether you opt for a lighter brown or a darker brunette, what defines mushroom brown hair is its undertone. “This is a cooler shade of brown than a typical brunette,” says celebrity hairstylist Dave Stanwell. “Mushroom brown is not just one shade, but has many cool brown tones that counteract to create the overall effect.”
While other popular brunette tones are dominated by warm shades and golden highlights, mushroom brown lends itself to a more muted color palette. “This shade is a soft, earthy brown with muted, natural tones,” explains celebrity hairstylist and Balmain hair ambassador Gonn Kinoshita. “It is inspired by the natural tones of mushrooms.”
How to Get the Shade
Because this shade is multifaceted, it’s probably best to leave this to the professionals. And aside from a good photo of your desired tone, there are some key points to keep in mind when discussing this look with your colorist.
“Ask for a mix of soft blonde and natural brown shades with an ash undertone,” explains Kinoshita. “Request for a combination of highlights and lowlights but in a seamless, natural way. You should be clear that the color should look blended and effortless and avoid chunky contrasts.”
“I would specifically ask for cooler tones, on the ashier side,” Stanwell adds.
Maintain Your Mushroom Brown Hair
Stanwell recommends a color-deepening shampoo to retain the rich tone of mushroom brown hair. To maintain your color, Kinoshita suggests the Balmain Hair Revitalizing Mask, which is rich in cashmere protein and vitamin E.
