Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern for many people. In melanated skin, it can occur for many different reasons and is often a lingering issue stemming from acne and blemishes. Despite being a common concern, it can be difficult to deal with. However, incorporating a serum with targeted ingredients like kojic acid can help. “Kojic acid is a natural compound derived from fungi and is often used for its skin-lightening properties,” says celebrity aesthetician Ian Michael Crumm.

That said, a kojic acid serum can be beneficial for fighting discoloration. Sarah Akram, aesthetician and founder of Sarha Akram Skincare, shares that these serums function as a treatment and can be used to combat sun damage, scarring, age spots and uneven skin tone. “The ingredient is mainly used to fade dark spots but also serves as an antimicrobial agent and can help treat acne caused by bacteria on the skin,” she says. Like most natural ingredients, kojic acid is rich in antioxidant properties. “This allows it to protect the skin from oxidative stress,” says Crumm.
Kojic acid can be found in many forms, but if you’re new to using a kojic acid serum, the experts suggest using it in tandem with hydrating ingredients. “Kojic acid can be slightly drying or irritating, so it’s best to pair it with hydrating products to avoid dryness,” says Crumm. Fortunately, there are many different formulations available.
