When Taylor Swift walked the 2024 VMAs red carpet, it felt like the internet collectively lost its mind over the Karma singer’s orange lip color. The toned-down auburn color departs from Swift’s typical red lip look. It’s no surprise that fans immediately jumped into sleuth mode to decipher the exact burnt orange lip colors responsible for the stunning shade. They thought they found it in Swift’s beloved Pat McGrath Labs Dramatique Mega Lip Pencil (in shade Nude Oasis). But, a few weeks later Swift’s makeup artist Lorrie Turk clarified the Grammy winner’s VMAs lip was thanks to NARS The Original Lipstick in Morocco.
With the mystery solved, Swift continues to rock similar burnt orange lip colors, whether cheering on Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs or on date nights all over NYC. Simply put, Swift has cemented orange lip colors as THE shade of the season.
In that spirit, I found 14 lipsticks ranging in hue from beiges and peaches to auburns and cinnamons that play up fall’s warm and toasty vibes. Keep reading to see all the picks!
PAT McGRATH LABS Dramatique Mega Lip Pencil in Nude Oasis ($29)
While this lip pencil may not have been the exact product used on Swift at the VMAs, the initial frenzy (and Swift’s noted love of the pencil) resulted in Nude Oasis selling out almost everywhere. Be sure to set your alerts for the next restock because the shade will likely fly off the shelves again.
NARS The Original Lipstick in Morocco ($26)
Described by the brand as a “matte warm cinnamon,” this is the lipstick Swift wore to the VMAs. NARS recently restocked it after it sold out back in September. I recommend adding this lightweight lipstick to your cart immediately!
NARS Explicit Lipstick in No Shame ($40)
If you’re looking for a shade in the color family of Morocco, but a little more vibrant, the NARS Explicit Lipstick in No Shame has a pretty apricot brown hue.
MERIT Beauty Signature Lip in Antibes ($26)
Antibes is a soft peach matte lipstick that is the perfect everyday color, no matter the season. But, it would look especially pretty in the fall.
MERIT Beauty Signature Lip in Cabo ($26)
If you’re still traumatized by the matte lips of the 2010s, MERIT’s Cabo is a soft red-orange with a satin finish.
ILIA Color Block Lipstick in Cinnabar ($28)
ILIA’s clean and super-hydrating Color Block Lipstick in Cinnabar is a “muted brick with warm undertones,” per the brand. If you love a creamy finish, this is your pick.
Glossier Generation G in Cake ($20)
I have had Cake in my makeup bag since at least 2015. The subtle peach shade is the definition of “your lips but better.” The formula glides on smoothly, blurs lips just enough and the sheer matte finish is comfortable, not drying.
Kosas Weightless Lip Color in Vegas ($26)
Another clean and creamy lip formula comes from Kosas. The shade Vegas is a warm beige that’ll look good with anything.
e.l.f. O Face Satin Lipstick in Me, Myself and I ($9)
e.l.f. makes some of my favorite makeup ever, and not just for the affordable prices. O Face in Me, Myself and I gives off a bold, burnt orange color and keeps lips nourished and hydrated with squalane and jojoba esters.
Gucci Rouge à Lèvres Mat Lipstick in Lucy Dark Orange ($47)
Gucci’s Rouge à Lèvres Mat lipsticks are inspired by “iconic Hollywood movies and characters from the gilded era.” In Lucy Dark Orange, the warm hue is rich, but soft and velvety, thanks to gelling waxes and moisturizing pigments.
Clinique Pop Longwear Lipstick in Cappuccino Pop ($26)
Clinique’s Cappuccino Pop is a warm taupe and is available in a satin, matte or a shiny finish. The longwear lipstick also has built-in primer for an extra smooth application and comfortable wear.
L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Satin Lipstick in Toasted Almond ($7)
You can’t go wrong with L’Oréal’s Colour Riche Satin Lipstick—it’s a classic for a reason. Toasted Almond is a distinctively pretty, warm brown.
MAC Cosmetics Powder Kiss Lipstick in Marrakesh Mere ($27)
MAC’s Powder Kiss is described as a lipstick that “delivers the zero-shine look of matte, with a cushiony, light feel of a balm.” Marrakesh Mere is a color reminiscent of the bazaars of Morocco.
Violette_FR Bisou Jelly in Bonbon Caramel ($29)
My newest obsession is Violette_FR’s Bisou Jelly in Bonbon Caramel. The brand says the color is “a rich, caramel brown that gives lips a touch of natural warmth and luminosity.” I can confirm the brand is telling the truth.
